How to practice Cobra Pose

Cobra does not need to be high to be useful. A small lift with a long neck and grounded legs can feel more stable and more premium than a forced backbend.

Step by step

1
Lie on the bellyPlace the tops of the feet on the mat and let the legs extend behind you comfortably.
2
Set the handsBring the hands beside the ribs or under the shoulders with elbows hugging gently back.
3
Ground the lower bodyPress lightly through the tops of the feet and keep the pelvis grounded.
4
Inhale and liftLift the chest a small amount using the back body, not only the arms.
5
Keep the neck longLook slightly forward and down so the back of the neck stays comfortable.
6
Exhale and lowerRelease slowly back to the mat and repeat for a few calm breaths if it feels good.
Maya's breathing cue

“Lift from the heart, not from force. Keep the back of the neck soft.”

Make it comfortable

Keep it as Low Cobra with the chest only a few inches off the mat.
Place a folded towel under the pelvis if the floor feels hard.
Move the hands slightly forward or wider if that feels better on the shoulders.
Skip or reduce the pose if it creates lower-back pinching.

Quick form check

Lower back feels spacious, not compressed.
Shoulders are away from the ears.
Elbows stay soft rather than locked.
Legs stay grounded and the movement remains controlled.
Safety note: Move within a comfortable range. Stop if you feel pain, numbness, dizziness, or sharp discomfort. This guide is for general wellness and inspiration and is not medical advice.

When to use this pose

Cobra works well when you want a gentle energy lift, a chest opener after sitting, or a simple counter-shape after forward folding.

Three simple uses

Morning energy:  practice a low version for 3 breaths to wake up the front body.
Desk posture reset:  use it after long sitting to open the chest gently.
Flow pairing:  pair with Child’s Pose or Cat-Cow for a balanced mini-reset.
